Ekotrope RATER approved for Florida energy code

Ekotrope was recently approved as a residential energy code compliance software in Florida for the R405 Performance Path, R402 Total UA, and R406 ERI path. Becoming an approved software was a timely and rigorous process. Please read more about it below.

Who is Ekotrope?

Ekotrope is an energy modeling software company out of Boston, Massachusetts which started as a grad student project at MIT in 2010. Since then, Ekotrope has become the most widely used software for HERS Ratings in the country, processing over 400,000 new homes annually. We support all versions of the International Energy Conservation Code and dozens of state amended codes.

How Ekotrope Gained Accreditation

  • Implemented the Energy Code

  • Added new Florida specific energy code compliance reports

  • Completed a review process with the Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulations

  • The FDBPR voted to approve Ekotrope as an approved residential energy code compliance software on August 5th 2025 (meeting minutes linked here).

What to look for in Ekotrope Code Submissions?

Ekotrope supports the required code compliance documents that are expected in Florida - as required through the FDBPR accreditation process. You can view the expected code compliance documentation at this link. If a user is taking the R403.7.1 exception, then an approved Manual J must be submitted along with the Ekotrope reports.

Ekotrope offers Projected and Confirmed reports for Code Compliance. Projected reports are based on the builder's plans and specs. They represent the planned house and are primarily used for permitting purposes. Confirmed reports are issued after an inspector has verified the constructed house. These reports are typically issued before the certificate of occupancy is issued but that varies depending on the jurisdiction. Each report type will be clearly labeled as either Projected or confirmed. It is within the discretion of the inspector to ask for additional reports or information of the home.

Example Reports

This example shows a set of reports for the R405 Performance Pathway that are UNCONFIRMED. On the cover page the user should check the boxes that correspond to what is being submitted. The large UNCONFIRMED watermark indicates this is a Projected report, not a Confirmed report that has been field confirmed. Unconfirmed reports are generated at the permitting phase of the project. They indicate field inspections have not been completed.
