Ventilation Market Shifts in Residential New Construction
Which Ventilation Systems Are Builders Installing?
This interactive dashboard tracks the share of Ekotrope HERS-rated new homes using each major mechanical ventilation strategy — energy- and heat-recovery ventilators (ERV and HRV), balanced, supply-only, and exhaust-only systems — across active states and climate zones from Q1 2024 through Q1 2026.
Between Q1 2024 and Q1 2026, the national mix held remarkably steady: Supply-only has recently surpassed exhaust-only to take the top spot, holding slightly less than half all installs (43% in Q1 2026). Energy-recovery systems overall (ERV plus HRV) are slowly climbing in their share of the market — up from 9% in Q1 2024 to 14% by Q1 2026. That national stability masks sharp variation at the state level. Massachusetts leads the field at 87% energy-recovery share by Q1 2026, with Minnesota close behind at 78%. Maryland climbed the fastest, reaching 22% — up nearly 20 points in two years. The picture shifts again across climate zones, which the dashboard breaks out alongside the state and national views.
Ekotrope's dataset covers about 25% to 30% of all new construction in the U.S., offering a uniquely reliable window into these trends, verified at the point of field inspection rather than self-reported. Please note that some states may have lower HERS Rating adoption than others, so this data does not necessarily reflect the overall ventilation mix in every state.
We’ve displayed only 15 states in our dashboard, so if you are interested in exploring this data further please reach out to learn more!
